*winces* be careful with that. those caps tend to be quite stubborn, and it is very easy to strip them out

plastic or metal? if metal, you can take them apart and clean them.  I will warn you that it is a pain in the arse though. those follower springs are hella long and have a bad attitude.

Brasso is in fact slightly corrosive, though unless you let it sit there for a long time, it shouldn't have affected it that much. did you take the bucking off the barrel first? because if not, the rubber may have adversely affected it. Myself, I pretty much do exactly what the guide posted here say...
