I asked an officer today about having a registered gun in your car and his response was as fallows. It must be in some form of glove box or console that has some type of latched closing mechanism, but doesn't have to lock. And even though it is NOT required, they suggest you tell an approaching officer that you have the weapon with both hands still on the wheel.

There's a lot of useful information on SLED's website. Don't always take what a police officer says as 100% accurate..as you can see from this thread not all of them know what they are talking about.

SECTION 16-23-20. Unlawful carrying of handgun; exceptions.

(9) a person in a vehicle if the handgun is secured in a closed glove compartment, closed console, closed trunk, or in a closed container secured by an integral fastener and transported in the luggage compartment of the vehicle; however, this item is not violated if the glove compartment, console, or trunk is opened in the presence of a law enforcement officer for the sole purpose of retrieving a driver’s license, registration, or proof of insurance;

jsts ghost wrote:Correct. Back on topic. If you sell an Airsoft gun, by law you MUST have 1/4 inch permanent blaze orange tip. Once you bought it, there is no law in sc, ga, nc, or fed stating you have to have it on your personal Airsoft gun.
I know this is a dead topic, but I have to make it clear once again; the ONLY time this applies is when the sale is across state lines. This federal law operates pursuant to the interstate commerce clause and is not applicable to any case in which a person does not have an orange tip on their replica firearm except if they are selling it and transporting it across a state line. I don't know how many times I have said this, but not only have I researched it myself, but I had this looked into by the attorney I used to work for and a mutual friend that is a solicitor with Lexington county.

Well look at what I miss when I'm gone...

Just tossing in my two cents, but with growing up knowing judges and more police officers than I could remember to count, I feel that I need to mention something no one else here has, despite the quoting of laws and ordinances. It's not about the law, but the interpretation of the law. And everyone is going to interpret it a little differently.

That being said, you may not be required to consent to a search of your vehicle, but if you say no, then any officer with a brain is going to be suspicious of your reason to say no. Also, even if you aren't required to tell an officer of a weapon, replica or RS, here in SC, that doesn't mean it holds true for every other state. Every state has it's own weapon laws, a good example being how it's legal to carry a sword in NC, but in SC it's illegal to have a blade longer than the width of your palm on your person. And even if you aren't required to tell them, I imagine it would put you in there better graces if you were to say let them know you have them, since when they stop you and get of of their car, they have no idea if they'll be dealing with someone pleasant and understanding of if the person has a gun on their lap ready to shoot.

But anyway, I digress. I'm not much for arguing the finer points of our legal system, hence my not being in school to become a laywer.
