Sniping takes a lot of time and money. Go 'Assault'

Re: Sniper or Assault Rifle
1. A sniper is a person. a sniper rifle is a gun.
2. A sniper rifle will not shoot as far as an assault rifle unless you spen $300-$1000 upgrading it. The M16 will shoot further out of the box.
3. Out of curiosity, how old are you?

Avenger is absolutely right. Unless you're prepared to sink $500-$700 into a rifle, the only thing you'll have at the end of the day is a airsoft gun that fires slower and maybe a tiny bit more accurately than most fully auto weapons you're up against. You can still hang back and fire at people if you carry an assault rifle, plus you have the ability to just lay lots of bb's into plywood for suppression.
Try not to get too hung up on being in a specific "role" or whatever. Just get out there and have fun.

Re: Sniper or Assault Rifle
Since most people know about snipers from video games and movies, let me tell it to you straight: In airsoft (as well as in real life), sniping is a SUPPORT role.
In airsoft, snipers tend to be only effective in a "terrain denial" role. A well-placed pair of snipers can make it so that the other side has to spend far more manpower and time to remove the threat OR to go around the threat, wasting precious time. This usually works if the snipers were able to get in place without being attacked. From the point of view of the sniper, this role requires patience and acceptance of the fact that you will NOT get as many kills as your average rilfeman.
On the assault side, snipers are usually not as effective as riflemen. Equal money put into them, a sniper rifle will usually (and this is a BROAD generalization) be slightly more accurate in exchange for being able to put less than 1% as many rounds downrange. The accuracy gives you a greater effective range, certainly, but only a matter of a dozen feet or so. Since the placement of trees and cover has a greater affect on how close you are to your opponent, you won't really notice the range advantage 9 times out of 10.
Less accurate guns can easily "arc" rounds at you until you get hit by a lucky shot before you get that perfet hit between the eyes.
Is it true that there can be snipers in airsoft that seem like they have a godly ability to reach out and "touch" you while you never see them?
Certainly
Is it really satisfying to hit an enemy dead center mass when they had no idea you were even there?
HELL YEAH
Will spending $200 on an airsoft sniper rifle make you an effective sniper?
Not Likely

Re: Sniper or Assault Rifle
Good lord, try to combine everything into one reply. If you're in the lowcountry (Charleston, Summerville, Mount Pleasant), you should probably get to the ACE Hardware in Summerville. They've got a good selection of pistols, some for pretty cheap.
Also, if you have a M-16 with a few extra magazines, you probably won't need a pistol as well. The only time I've ever used my sidearm is when my primary gun has completely gone down.. like out of battery power or completely out of ammo. Very rare.
If you have $200 to spend, I'd recommend picking up a decent M4, good battery, decent charger, and maybe an extra hi-cap. Unless you want to play more realistically, then pick up some mid-caps.

Sniper Rifle+Full PDI upgrades+no scope.= ownage.
But only if you have some serious money to drop in it. But there is something special when you only have 1 shot.
