Actually looked this up, and the civilian P90 is named as a carbine, but only because they can't call it a SMG or a PDW. I don't think that changes the fact that the P90, in original form, is really a submachine gun. (Or a personal defense weapon; the differences between them become pretty subjective)

Some argument could be made that a carbine is simply a rifle with a short(er) barrel, and thus the P90 qualifies. ....Sorta. It'd be a tough sell.

The P90 is a carbine that is classified as a PDW.

PDWs are chambered to fire rifle cartridges, which is why the P90 isn't a submachine gun (which fire pistol cartridges.)
