Re: Coms
Reviving this topic with a question: I'm looking at two radios, the Baofeng f-11 and UV-5R+.
They are both essentially the same, except the f-11 is a US specific version. The only real difference is that the f-11 goes to 520 mhz while the uv-5r+ goes to 480. The UV-5R+ is also about half the cost of the f-11.
So the question is, are an extra 40mhz worth the $30~?

Re: Coms
if I am not mistaken one is operating in the VHF range the 136-174 Mhz.
are they both VHF, UHF? Or does one operate in the VHF/UHF range and the other only in the UHF range?
also found this on the interwebs:

>Any reasons why some HT go to 520mhz? Some only to 480mhz? Are there
>advantages to select either one? In Canada that gets up to the TV
>frequencies. Are the antennas able to handle that range well? Thanks
As far as I can tell, the 400-480 MHz vs. 400-520 MHz range is purely labeling. Probably necessary by the manufacturer to get certain approval from the various radio spectrum authorities around the world.
Also as far as I know, all UV-5Rs from the original BFB230 firmware to present, can be easily have the programming range expanded to the 400-520 MHz range by using the OEM VIP software or CHIRP.
Don't expect your antenna to cover 400-520 MHz for transmitting. If you are licensed for and intend to transmit in the expanded range, you may need an antenna specifically designed for use in that range of frequencies.

If this is true I would get the one that can operate in both VHF and UHF

Re: Coms
I believe both of them do VF and UHF. Essentially the f-11 is the UV-5R made with some software feature to make it compliant to some US code for some blah blah.
Yeah, they both say 136-174, and then the one says 400-480 and the other days 400-520.
In that case I think I shall go with the cheaper one unless anyone thinks it'll make a huge difference. Thanks for the help Marshall.

No problem. I have head good things about the Baofeng as if I remember correctly it is a copy of a puxing, which is a good radio.

Re: Coms
Your primary concern is the operating range of 400-480, or 400-520. Either will be sufficient. Standard GMRS and FRS channels operate on frequencies inside this range, which accounts for all "Walmart radios". Namely 462.XXX and 467.XXX. UV-5R+ will suit your needs.
