darkhaven's catalogue of creative colonoscopies 2.0

Post by darkhaven3 » Thu Oct 25, 2012 1:19 am

I'll be honest, I don't know what else to type here. This thread was originally deleted and I was given a vague PM saying "read the rules and repost"; I can't state for the life of me what the issue was originally, and all I have to go on is that the moderator that deemed my original thread unacceptable might believe so because there was "nothing to talk about", as per the stickied thread in this forum. I don't know how this is or why he believes this is the case, and I honestly don't know what else to tell you about these things other than the tools I used to make them. Other than this paragraph and the additional "liner notes" about what tools I used to make these things, the thread is as close to as-is as I can manage.

The following scenes were produced with Doom Builder 2, or a branch thereof:
=================

Doom - Map for esselfortium's "Back to Saturn X" project - "Isolation Drills"
Doom - Tribunal Deathmatch
Doom - HACX 2.0 - MAP27 (untitled)
Doom 64 - untitled map

The following two MP3s are part of a collection of ambient tracks to be played as an "OST" for Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer modes. They are based on Michael McCann's "Splinter Cell Double Agent" soundtrack, and were edited with Audacity and GoldWave.
=========
Modern Warfare 2 - "Derail" (MP3)
Modern Warfare 2 - "Afghan" (MP3)

These MIDIs were all produced with Guitar Pro 5.
=========
"Nanonucleonic Cyborg Summoning" (MIDI)
"The Denial Suite II" (MIDI)
"The Texture of Madness" (MIDI) (unfinished)
"Slave to Time" (MIDI) (unfinished)
"Inside the Fire" (MIDI) (Disturbed transcribe) (unfinished)
"Boiling Point" (MIDI) (featured in MSDuel)
A song I wrote in 100 minutes called "Storming the Castle" (MIDI) (unfinished)
"Dread Invasion" (MIDI) (unfinished)
"Event Horizon" (MIDI) (unfinished)
"The Denial Suite I" (MIDI)
"After All is Gone" (MIDI)
"Orchard of Lamentations" (MIDI)
"Sea of Tranquility" (MIDI) (Prototype transcribe)
"The Lost Soul and the Heretic" (MIDI)
"What Lies Beyond" (MIDI) (Pyramaze transcribe)
"Darkest Days" (MIDI)
"Freedom Fighters" (MIDI)
"Statement of Faith" (MIDI) (unfinished)
"Clawing Your Way" (MIDI) (unfinished)

Old MP3s. Made with a Fender Stratocaster with Yngwie pickups (I forget the make) and Floyd-Rose bridge, and a Jackson WRMG Warrior with EMG-81 and EMG-85 pickups. The bass is an Ltd B-502. The drums are a set of Rock Band (360) drums run through DrumMachine with a custom double-bass input.
=========
"Driller" (MP3) (based on the C64 game of the same name)
"Gates to Infinity" (MP3)
"Future Shock" (MP3)
"Visions of the Heart" (MP3)
"Cornered by Death" (MP3)

"No Dreams Breed..." cover (MP3)

That's all for now, go away

The use of profanity in both the title and body of the post lead me to believe you had either never read our forum rules, or were intentionally disregarding them. Hence the deletion and PM asking you to read the forum rules and re-post it. Since you still don't know what was wrong with it in the first place, my guess is you still have not read them. Please do so.

I guess after being cursed out enough in Chat I figured that rule had become a colloquially antiquated concept. Sorry for that.

Naw, I just can't moderate the chat and it tends to scroll by pretty fast.

I haven't seen a Doom map in a decade, much less played it. Nostalgia mode!

Back on subject (the subject of course being things nobody cares about):

Doom: Back to Saturn X screenshots: 1 2
Doom: An MSPaint Experiment (tm): 1
Doom: Palette Experiments (tm): 1 2

MIDI: Call of the Dragon (MIDI) (unfinished) (cover of the Elder Scrolls themesongs)

What's your reason for making Doom maps vs. something like the Source engine?

Side note: TES MIDI is pretty okay.

I do actually make stuff in the later id Tech engines like Quake, Doom 3, and the Unreal Engine, but there is a certain kind of feel you get when expressing scenes in the Doom engine that is so simple, straight-forward and elegant that you realize after years of mapping (like me) that making levels for the Doom engine is nothing like mapping for any other game. You have the freedom as a mapper to create almost anything you can draw on paper, but at the same time you also have the freedom to create something that is simple in architecture and abstract in form, yet is very elegant in gameplay flow. It's a freedom that I find is more restricted in the Source engine, the Doom 3 engine, or even Unreal.

For example, in this scene, I found that drawing lines in 2D space to initially represent the structures in the scene a very straightforward and intuitive process that I would not have been able to express nearly as easily in say, the Unreal engine.
