DIY Kydex

Post by SteevoLS » Mon Aug 30, 2010 2:15 pm

Now that I'm moving towards chest rigs and away from vests/dropleg gear, I need a holster for my G18C that will accept a weapon light. I've seen some impressive custom holsters, and Kydex is dirt cheap online. I'd like to build a MOLLE-mountable Kydex holster.

My question is this: Does anybody know of local (in South Carolina) stores that carry Kydex? I'd just as soon support the local economy if at all possible.

is it pretty easy to mold kydex yourself? I'm not very knowledgeable on the subject.

Obviously there is a lot of finesse involved in making it look good, but it is literally as simple as cutting a piece down to size, heating it, and draping it over what you want to mold.

that's really cool. Is there any chance of it sticking to your gun/mag/knife/whatever?

Nope; it's not adhesive at all.

So basically you could put some serious leather gloves on, heat the kydex up and mold it to your gun perfectly until it looks delicious. Nice.

More or less. Here are some great little "crash course" tutorials.

Stephen, when you get some of this and start to work with it let me know. I am interested in a few projects myself.

Will do! I'm going to order 10 or 20 square feet as soon as I get my paycheck.
