AEP Primary Practicality

Is it practical to use an AEP as a primary? Hypothetically speaking I would have a TM m93r, probably a few of the highcap mags, and some batteries. I would upgrade the barrel to a 6.01. Other than that, what upgrade options are there? Can you upgrade the FPS? And WITH all of these upgrades is it going to stand a chance as a primary? Like equal distance to maybe an mp5?

My thoughts are why would you want to use an AEP as a primary?

If you spend the money on it and really upgrade it, you can make a semi-shot primary. It will be as far as a cqb gun and that would be it. You can buy body parts as well (EX: the conversions for glocks)

Cost of Tokyo Marui M93R: $180ish
Cost of new internals: $100+
Cost of tightbore: $40+
Cost of 3 hicap mags: $100+
Cost of 1 lipo (only battery worth using): $50

Cost: Around $500

Cost of brand new high end AEG from G&P/KWA/VFC/TM/King Arms/whatever: Between $250-400

You'd end up with a pistol with great range and accuracy, but the FPS will still be under or around 300 with a .20g. Don't get me wrong, I've been touting AEPs as the best thing since sliced bread for years, but only as CQB guns and sidearms.

AEPs are not easily upgraded to use more powerful batteries. Those 7.4 V AEP batts have very strange connections that require that you get some real wiring work done. This also means that you cannot upgrade your spring and expect the motor to pull it.

I've use a TM MP7 as a backup gun on a drop leg for a while now, and I love it when it works. The problem is that those little gearboxes don't hold up so well and the FPS is still the stock 280. Aftermarket 320-340 FPS springs exist for AEPs, but the motors cannot honestly pull them w/o a bigger battery. A bigger battery requires custom wiring in odd places, especially on the MP7.

I'm with Steevo, don't use an AEP for a primary at a non-CQB game. You want mobility? Go for an MP5, AK74, or MC-51 (G3 shorty) style of gun and then add some upgrades to that. You'll get more reliability and better options for power/accuracy.

Ditto and all that jazz, but I am just curious as to why you ask if it will be comparable to the range of an MP5 Blackout? MP5s are not inherently less accurate or have less range than any other AEG. Remember, this is not real steel, AEGs performance is based off of what's inside, not how their real world counterparts operate ;)

I just saw an mp5 as having a shorter barrel therefore getting the pistol to that range of an mp5 would be reasonable

Barrel length in airsoft has almost nothing to do with range, a very common misconception though.

Could you explain

It is the hop up that gives you the range, not necessarily the barrel length.

But doesn't longer inner barrel mean better accuracy?

To a certain point, however, we are shooting sphere objects out of smooth-bore barrels...

So the point of getting an m14 over a p90 to be a dmr is? Besides looks?

Barrel length can have a minor affect on accuracy, but it is usually pretty negligible. The quality of the barrel is more important than the length; and the bucking, nub, BBs, and chamber are far more important than the barrel. As for your example, my old P90 was more accurate than either the AGM or the CA M14s that I have owned.
