Upgrading Springs (and possibly other internals)

Post by theonlybuster » Thu Feb 25, 2010 9:50 am

I've been trying to teach myself how to do modifications and upgrades to weapons.  I started with spring pistols, then bolt-action rilfes, and now I'm planning on moving to AEGs.

Of course AEGs are a little more sophisticated than springgers and bolt-action rifles.  I plan on replacing/upgrading the spring in a gearbox.  I have plans and tutorials, and a few say to re-shim and add various parts to the gearbox while it's open to improve it (if done correctly).

I'm curious if I upgrade the spring in a Echo 1 G36C (with 6mm ball bearings) from the stock M100 spring to a M110 or M120 spring would I absolutely have to do the whole shimming, is it heavily recommended, kinda recommended, or fine without all that stuff?

Also aside from shimming is there anything else I should worry about?

**I'm upgrading the spring because the weapon is about 2 1/2 yrs old and the spring is losing it's strength due to my old trigger happy days

um you shouldnt have too reshim the whole thing as long as its already shimmed correctly.  just be careful when you open it, and account for all the shims that were on top of the gears.  you may have to remove and reset the lower gear to put the anti-reversal latch back in place, as they tend to come out when you open the box.

6mm ball bearings weak, and have a tendency to fail.  I'f you're going to install an M120, go for solid bushings.  You'll have a much more reliable setup.

Check various other components for wear, as there are several things that may be close to failure. Also, after that long (and I'm assuming much us) it will be necessary to clean out the old lube and relube it properly. White lithium or Teflon lube on high friction stuff, like the axles and bushings, etc. and 100% silicon lube for airseal areas. It will also need a new Oring, #14 will fit. Check the shimming as well, if it's stock than it is crappy (with very rare exception). There are some good shimming guides around.

Or, you could pay me to do the work, and get a free in depth tutorial while I show you how to do everything hands on (There are several other people that would do the same thing, if they are closer to you).

Thanks for all the advice everyone.

And Dominum, thanks for the invite, but I'm down in Florida right now so it's gonna be a tad bit hard to meet up.  But I'll definitely absorb all the advice and take my time, go slow, and try to keep my head on straight.

Mechbox.com is a very awesome place to find info, and as much as it pains me to recommend a competitor...lol, Evike.com has some great disassembly and assembly videos.
