Lubricants?

What do you think lubricants are for?  It speaks for itself. 
Thin-silicone, motor oil
Thick-grease, graphite, Teflon

I think it depends what its being applied on to achieve your performance.
Purpose: separate parts, amt. of friction, seals off debris/inert or gases... etc.

Please elaborate.  Help needed
