barrel cleaning

Post by slickridley » Wed Jan 19, 2011 1:50 pm

During my yearly re-lube/shim job on my gun I noticed that my barrel was hella dirty
So i took a lot of warm slightly soap water to it to clean it out,
but it just wouldn't clean, so poured some "Brasso" down it and scrubbed it out and now the barrel is shooting worse that what it was, almost a dam shotgun effect, did I bork that barrel?

Did you remove the barrel to clean it, or is there a chance you got some liquid on your hop-up?

I'm pretty sure you should never use anything other than silicone oil to clean a barrel. You need to clean it after every use. Brasso takes off a thin layer of metal, and not necessarily evenly. I wouldn't be suprised if you needed a new one. The diameter needs to be consistent to get a good air seal.

Maybe the Brasso left a residue, and cleaning it properly could get it out. Otherwise, it might be messed up.
Here's a guide from Henry on barrel cleaning:
Dominum wrote: 7: "How and when should I clean my barrel?"  You should clean your airsoft gun's barrel after every game, or at least every other one, depending on how many rnds you went through, etc. There is a right way and a wrong way to do this. First, remove your mag and clear the chamber by firing it on semi. Secondly, turn the hopup all the way off. Thirdly, use an airsoft "unjamming rod" that is at least as long as your barrel. Cut pieces of papertowel or a similar material that won't leave large amounts of "fluff" in there (like TP, don't use that), but make sure it can compress, most cloths don't do that well and may be too loose. Cut it into sections approx. 1" by 2". Fold it in half lengthwise and slip it through the eye on the cleaning rod. Rotate it so it makes a cylindrical "plug". Add some 100% silicon oil to it, and put it into the barrel. It should be tight, and you should swab out the entire barrel while rotating it. Continue to do this with new pieces with silicon oil until they come out clean. Then do the same thing, but with NO silicon oil, at least twice, and until the pieces come out both clean and dry. The purpose is to remove buildup, and then to remove the silicon oil that you used initially. You do not ever want any type of lubricant in your barrel, or on your hopup.

If anything, brasso should be helpful. Brass tarnishes with age, and Brasso's main purpose is to remove that tarnish and restore the original finish. I'd clean the barrel thoroughly with silicone oil-soaked swabs, but I wouldn't necessarily blame the brasso.

I was just saying that because being in JROTC I use brasso almost every day, and if your brass is scratched, the scratch gets smaller and smaller until it goes away. Also, if you have a scratch on a phone screen, if it isn't deep, you can remove it with brasso. From this, you can conclude that it is, in fact corrosive. That's how it restores the shine. The top layer bonds with oxygen. That's the tarnish. The brasso removes the top layer. I highly doubt it removes an even amount of metal in every spot, so it could make the air seal around the bb slightly messed up.

It removes the dirt, but It could probably also cause damage. It depends. I don't think it could cause enough damage to completely destroy the barrel, though. There probably is another issue.

Brasso is in fact slightly corrosive, though unless you let it sit there for a long time, it shouldn't have affected it that much. did you take the bucking off the barrel first? because if not, the rubber may have adversely affected it. Myself, I pretty much do exactly what the guide posted here says.  However since I don't have any unjamming rods, I use an M16 cleaning kit (5.56mm perfect) and it does wonders for cleaning a barrel.  If you want, shoot me a PM and I can swing by and take a look at it sometime.
