M21

Post by Avenger » Sat May 05, 2012 3:30 pm

Hello AOSC! I am gearing up for an M21 build, and I'm wondering what to get. I was looking at this:http://www.evike.com/product_info.php?products_id=24797 and a Kory Escue hopup job.

What do you think about the parts I'm planning on, and what FPS is SP120?

Sooooo you're going to put a scope on your M14? I could have sworn all that happened with the original M21 was Rock Island Armory slapping scopes on ~1500 M14s.

Guarder SP120 should be around 350-360 with a .25. The upgrade kit would run fine, but if you're only putting in a 120 I would just work with what you have and fix it if and when it breaks.

Yes, Rock Island Arsenal put scopes and match grade ammunition with M14s and changed the name to M21. I was hoping that the upgrade kit would improve performance, but I guess not?

That depends on how you define performance. A beat up old pickup going 60 MPH goes just as fast as a supercar going 60 MPH. Virtually every chiclone AEG comes with at least a M120 these days; it's not a very strong spring. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Do some compression work, check the AoE on the piston, shim the gears nicely, and wait for something to fail before you dump money into the gun. That's what I do with every gun I own that I don't intend to turn in to a monster DMR or CQB money hose, and it hasn't failed me yet.

Most upgrade kits are a waste of money. Most of the time, many of those parts don't break, or they don't offer really good parts as replacements. 90% of the time, the stock gears will hold the spring, especially in a chiclone, same goes for the piston and most of the other parts in there.

So what do I need for a 250-300 feet of range?

Great Compression, a good hop up, and good bbs are what you need for an accurate, long range gun.

Thanks. I want to toss in a 400 FPS spring, what kind of hopup do you suggest?
