Really mesh is the best way to go. If you add any more weight to that thing I don't think you will do much good. The sheer amount of weight that will be added by the players, mags, guns, BBs, gear, and likely cooler full of hydro means you really can't afford to weigh it down anymore than absolutely necessary. I would do some preliminary weight tests before you invest in building materials of any kind.
