I think my AEG M16 gearbox is shot

I went to charge up my battery the other day for some practice shots for the first time in a couple of months. When i put the battery in i made sure it was working by pulling the trigger a couple of times and it seemed to be working but the i heard a whirling sound and there was no kick like normal. I just heard it spinning. My theory is that there is a gear broken somewere or the spring isn't catching. Any theories on what might be wrong and if so how to fix it? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated before i have to go to someone else that ill have to pay to fix it.

Sounds sorta like a stripped piston more then a gear.. but it could be the pinion gear on top of the motor that's stripped or the motor height got knocked outta whack some how.

Theories aren't really necessary. Something is clearly stripped, so disassemble the gun to find out what it is. Go to Mechbox.com to get some takedown videos. Armalites are really quite simple to take down.
Assuming you follow the takedown procedure, you won't make things worse by disassembling the gun. I would take it apart and see what's broken; it should be obvious. If you aren't comfortable with fixing it yourself, then you can take it to a tech.

well i suppose i could take it to a tech. there is this one guy i know who gave up airsoft all together but is still a genius when it comes to internal workings if I'm lucky he wont charge me since i bought the gun from him in the first place when he quit

What is it, and what parts are in it? Unless you changed the motor mounting, it is either a stripped piston or gear.
