Torque up gearset question

I recently purchased a AIM M160 complete gearbox and it has Super torque gears. My question is do i need a stronger motor? I have a Classic Army High Torque motor and ROF is not a concern. I will be running a Large 9.6v battery as well. If I remember correctly you either use torque up gears or a stronger motor, but not both at the same time. Thanks for any insight on this.

yes you will need a stronger motor, you might want to consider options such as the g&p 160 or systema magnum

Torque up gear sets (which vary greatly in ratio) may certainly be used with stronger motors and normally should be. However, being it is an M160 drop in I have to assume they put in a 1:15 (highest ratio) gear set, which means that a stock motor will likely be able to cycle it with the proper battery. However, if it does it will shorten the life of the motor due to the immense draw. Therefore, I recommend you use a higher torque motor, but it is probably not imperative in this case. Your stock motor will be loud, and will not give good trigger response.

I would try your motor first. With those super torque gears, it's possible it won't have much difficulty turning them. However, if you do have issues, then look at getting something different. JG motors are incredibly strong, but are not very fast. They are about $20, which is why I mention them. On the other side of things, the G&P M170 is one of the best options on the market and is incredibly powerful and fast. I have achieved 31rps at 520fps with this motor on an 11.1v lipo with stock G&G gears, however it's a bit more expensive.
As for the gears, they are probably around 1:32 ratio gears. Standard gears are about 1:18 ratio, and speed gears are no lower than 1:13. 1:15 ratio would border on speed gears.
To sum it all up, if it sounds like your motor is straining, get a new one. You'll probably want a new motor regardless, and possibly a new battery depending on how powerful your 9.6v is. Your trigger response will be pretty slow with those torque gears.

Not sure what scale you are using, maybe pinion to sector, but I am using bevel to sector ratio (much easier to test and verify), hence 1:15 is as high as it gets.

Ah, ok, that would be the difference, I do count from the pinion to the sector gear.
