ICS M4 wiring issues

My favorite primary has a problem with it's wiring. It is currently front-wired, but because of the ICS split gearbox design, those wires have to go through many many tight turns and spaces in order to get past the gearbox and magwell.
This, combined with the fact that the wires are a fairly small size with very thin insulation, has led to the gun failing at nearly every game I bring it to. There is probably a short in there somewhere, so what I should do is to replace the wiring entirely.
I want to keep the gun front-wired, but I would like to bypass the need to thread them through the small holes in the gearbox and magwell. Is it possible to rear-wire the gearbox with longer and higher quality wires, then securely run them outside the lower receiver, around the magwell, and back into the front of the gun?
Has this been tried before? Would this bring up more problems than it would solve?
