So here it is now, all it has is a lonex a2 motor and er hop, internally everything else is stock. The externals are plain to see.

Stick with stock ratio... save yourself a bit of headache/upkeep.

What all would the upkeep be w/ 14:1 gears? I realize I will probably be putting more stress on parts, but i was wanting a really crisp trigger response.
Also i need a type 0 cylinder. Do i want aluminum, stainless steel? Does brand really matter?

Its just a very difficult build to get m170 on 14:1 gears... I'd think you'll have a more efficient system on stock gears. Less stress on the motor could even mean it cycles faster.

M170 on 14:1 might put you in a situation that the gun will cycle very fast on a powerful 11.1, but not cycle at all on a smaller 11.1. IMO, that means there is just a ton of stress on the system, both mechanically and electrically. Star might argue otherwise, but I think 18:1 or so gears, and even a 14.8v if you want, is the better way to get such quick trigger response.

well if thats the case i just get some strong 18:1s, not riot. But what is the difference in a stainless steel cylinder vs. an aluminum cylinder?

okay so i'm trying to now decide on 18:1 gears. I was thinking shs, but i heard the bevel gear isn't well made. Any suggestions?

I've been using shs in my "lower end" builds lately without issue. But I think they were the previous generation ones that had been sitting on shelves for a while. I have heard of slight issues with newer ones.

SHS Gears:
1st generation was great, but had some gear issues where they would separate.
2nd generation attempted to fix this, and did, but in doing so, they made the teeth on the bevel too thin, causing them to be too weak, and to strip. The magic number is .8mm thick, which is too small. The gen 1 bevel gears had 1mm thick teeth.
3rd generation look promising, and have just come out. There are two variations, one with a 9 tooth bevel and a 10 tooth bevel. The sets with the 9 tooth bevel are about 15% more torquey than the 10 tooth bevels. Both have thick teeth. The reason for the two variations is unknown.

They should last for what you are planning to do, I would stick with the 18:1 SHS though. Also, I think 14:1s on an SP170 might be pushing an A2 to the limit, I think it'd do it, but it'd warm up quite a bit. As for reliability, the weakness would be the motor. The rest of the internals could survive the strain just fine. If you wanted to stick with the 14:1s, I'd get a JG Blue, or build a custom motor.

Get a steel cylinder. Brass wears down, and aluminum is weak. Make sure it's steel, and not coated something.

The stock spring guide is fine, as are the rest of the stock internals. You are already planning on replacing the weaker components. But I'd keep the stock metal piston head instead of the Lonex POM head.

Be sure to rewire everything when you put the mosfet in. The stock wires are meh, and you're going to want some good ones to make sure you aren't starving anything from what it needs power wise.

I say stick to the stock ratio gears, 18:1 will put the motor under alot of stress. and may lock up your gearbox.

The lonex a2 motor w/ 18:1s should handle a sp170 fine. I know many guns that run that set up
