Technically, there were a few Japanese fighting in Vietam in 1940.

Yes, but that was during the beginning of WWII. He was speaking of the Vietnam War, circa 1960's-1970's.

The TBCs were at the Japan Expo 2013 (Paris, France). Lots of cosplayers and opportunities to explain what airsoft is about.
