I made up my mind, and built it ;D.

This is my new DMR. It's based on an E1 G3 SG1, and yes, I plan to get a nicer upper and lower receiver and outer barrel assembly in the near future. It should be shooting at about 520FPS, I use KSC .30s or Maruzen grandmaster .29s in it, but I'd like to try some heavier Madbulls to see if they perform even better. If anyone has .36s or heavier I'd like to buy a couple hundred to test out please. I fielded it at TT and was very happy. Instant trigger response, awesome range and accuracy. It looks good (IMHO) and handles well, light and comfortable. My only complaint is that the plastic body can bend a bit at the joint between the upper receiver and outer barrel assembly, but that will be fixed with new ones. I decided to use my stubby Zombie Killer suppressor for TT, but I may use my SOCOM style in the future. Both are functional, but I think it will need some sorbothane (more, that is, as it likely has it already) and some additional mods to be more quiet. Here's the part list:

Outside:
-High profile RIS mount, I forgot who made it, but it's solid and fits well, with a side mount I may find a use for
-4X40 illuminated R/G MilDot scope with external windage (The one that was in my FS thread)
-Low profile 1" rings
-Condor 3 point sling, switches to a 2 point when needed, and came with a bunch of extras I don't know what to do with LOL
-Not sure which I'll use yet, but either the TM SOCOM suppressor with foam, or the Stubby Zombie Killer suppressor with foam
-5 King Arms 110rnd MidCaps

Inside:
-Prometheus 470mm 6.03mm stainless steel tightbore barrel
-Firefly hard type AEG bucking
-Firefly hard type AEG nub
-TM EG1000 motor, may replace with a Systema, but I haven't made up my mind because the TM is so quiet and still pulls it well
-2200mah 11.1v 15C LiPo
-Systema drop in M150 gearbox for G3SG1 *I haven't had the chance to open it, but I was happy that it came with a MOSFET installed, with active breaking I presume and a helical gearset. When I open it for a tune up this weekend I will complete the gearbox parts list in detail.

No problem, my primary used to be a full length M14 with a 3-9x32 and I had no problems with that either. Mesh doesn't interfere with optics.

Considering that my $80 plinker can more than keep up with a certain Executive Coordinator someone's maxed-out G3, I'll post this little guy in here.

Dom, is that semi only? Just wondering what the FPS for a DMR that shoots in auto is? I am building a DMR out of my new KWA KM4 SR10 and I want to be within the FPS #'s.

Gotta be below 400 FPS to use full auto.

Dom's Tech Tips: #9 wrote: "Do airsoft replicas mimic their real counterparts' classification?"
Simply put, no. Almost any airsoft gun can be made to function as most any classification. An MP5 can be made to be a DMR, and an M14 may come stock as a CQBR. As far as airsoft is concerned, classification of weaponry is based on FPS with a .20g BB and is largely necessitated by the AOSC game rules as far as MEDs (Minimum Engagement Distances), fire selection and CQB specific rules go:

340 FPS with a .20g BB or less = CQBR (Close Quarters Battle Rifle) or sidearm, though not necessarily inneffective at greater ranges, and all sidearms are not under 340 FPS, though they aught to be, that way they have no MED. Full auto allowed with no MED. The purpose of this classification is for CQB fields, as a sidearm for when the enemy is close, and for use in buildings even on non-CQB fields. If building a CQBR you obviously want something shorter and lighter, and non-magnifying quick response optics are the preference here. Sidearms are obviously pistols for the most part, though sometimes people carry small AEGs or GBBs in the form of machine pistols, PDWs, and SMGs. Some people carry separate AEGs in a CQBR setup on all fields for close work, while some teams have assigned players with CQBRs as their primary even on non-CQB fields for clearing buildings and other close engagements. With a good hopup and other upgrades an AEG shooting this low can still have comparable range and accuracy to the average AEG at a higher FPS, but with the advantage of having no MED.

341-399 FPS with a .20g BB = Standard assault rifle setup. This is the average AEG in the field, with full auto allowed and a required 20ft MED. The average stock AEG comes somewhere in this range.

400-449 FPS with a .20g BB = Pseudo DMR (Designated Marksman Rifle), restricted to semi auto or bolt action and has a 50ft MED. Can have more range than the standard assault rifle, but not much, and at the cost of another 30ft of MED and no use of full auto.

450-600 FPS with a .20g BB = DMR or sniper rifle, restricted to a 100ft MED and semi auto or bolt action only. With the proper supporting upgrades you can engage targets with more accuracy and at a greater range than most other players.

*Note that though all bolt action guns are called "sniper rifles", unless properly upgraded they often have the equivalent, or even less FPS, range, and accuracy than a stock AEG. There is no such thing in airsoft as a stock bolt action rifle that is worthy of an actual airsoft sniper, it takes upgrades to give it the added range and accuracy over most AEGs, which is it's entire purpose.

*Note that you cannot simply throw a harder spring in any AEG and instantly have a DMR worth it's distinction. FPS alone does not mean accuracy, or even range. You must install the needed upgrades to make it more accurate, have longer range, and be able to handle the higher powered spring in order to have a useful DMR.

Excellent answer DW, and yes, anything over 400 FPS is semi or bolt action only. In airsoft, by definition a DMR or sniper rifle is never allowed to fire in full auto, and has a 100ft MED. If you want full auto, then you are not building a DMR. Stephen's modifyed Winchester is awesome, and certainly does keep up with my G3. However, my G3 was not maxed out... until now 8).

I just got a Guarder M170 in for the G3 today (and I recently installed a JBU full steel tooth aluminum piston) so I'm going to put it in tonight along with some custom compression mods. I expect to get a good bit closer to 600 FPS.
