THE FOLLOWING AIRSOFT EVENT IS NOT AFFILIATED, SANCTIONED, OR SPONSORED BY THE A.O.S.C. Event organizer ACCEPTS ALL RESPONSIBILITY OF SAID EVENT.

The purpose of this thread is to try to assemble a group from SC (plus neighboring states like GA) to attend this game. I am definitely going, and I have already spoken to a few people about this. Here is some info about the event:

Yeah... I don't think ANYONE in SC has ALL the required gear. This is the kind of thing you go out and buy the correct stuff for. I have very few things on the list, but I have 7 months to buy everything I need, and I am starting on it now. But, even if you do buy the right gear, isn't everyone on Division 9 under 18? No one under 16 can participate, and I don't think they are going to let anyone under 18 play the full immersive experience unless they are a father/son pair for obvious liability reasons.

Hey Dom, good to hear you are planning the trip!

My East Wind talk radar was beeping (Google analytics) so I figured I would pop in here and offer to directly answer any questions or concerns you guys might have.

We’ll hit a few things already mentioned first:

“age restrictions: Ages 16-18 only may participate as day players unless they have administrative approval to participate as a full time participant. If you wish to discuss the option of administrative approval please feel free to contact us at info@operationeastwind.com

We’re actually dropping the day player option this year. It just never really worked out that well and almost everyone who was planning to come as a day player generally changed their mind and became full time instead. Age restriction thing stays the same. We will allow 16-17 year olds who we either know personally, who are attending with parents/guardians, or those who are entirely the exception to the rule maturity wise. (Eagle Scouts, those in leadership roles in JROTC, or those with exceptional references)

“I am thinking we can rent a bus, van, or RV and go together”

The best rig I have seen for this if you can find someone who rents them is the Sprinter Vans. Here in Kansas City there is a place that rents them so when we hit the road as a group we usually try to grab one of those. They drive WONDERFULLY, have tons of room, and are powered by a fuel sipping 4 cylinder turbo diesel engine that’s quite easy on the wallet to feed. Lots of other guys just opt to take normal passenger cars supplemented by U-haul trailers too so keep that option in mind.

“Yeah... I don't think ANYONE in SC has ALL the required gear. “

Lol, nobody EVER has all the required gear… Anywhere… Ever… Heck I run the darn event and I have to go get more stuff every single year just to keep up with my own demands. (Vehicles add still more required stuff)

You are taking the correct tack for certain starting the search now, this stuff is all over the place and can all be had quite cheap if you beat the bushes and shop for deals rather than just grabbing the check book and heading to the surplus dealer the week before. Around here, we find tons of good stuff off of Craigs List, at Swap and Shops, Flea Markets and from what we have termed the underground military surplus economy. If you get out to some Militaria shows, go attend a military vehicle collector club meeting, and even just snoop around at Gun Shows you’ll quickly id guys who’s hobby is buying and selling surplus, these guys are a great resource for affordable gear in addition to a lot more information about the specific gear you are buying. For instance, did you guys know that Eagle made Alice stuff back in the day? Did you know that there is a (hard to find) specific parka liner for the night desert parka? Etc etc etc. Approach the shopping with a positive attitude and a clever mind and you will likely enjoy the hunting for kit as much as the event itself.

Anyhow, if there’s anything I can answer for you guys do let me know. Of course you should all feel free to register on the East Wind forums as well or just dig around and read up all you want.

Thanks for the info Aswayze, you are on the ball. It's a good sign that the guy running the event is so eager to be helpful. I'm sure we'll have more questions as it gets closer. I am going to start prepping my stuff in more earnest in a couple weeks. Right now the goal is to get several more people to commit with me, or at least start thinking about coming.

@ Dom:

One of the nice things about attending a smaller much more specific game is that pretty much every person attending can talk to the game organizers, get questions answered, get help etc without having to worry about there being 699 people in line in front of you asking the same things. :)

I have found that it saves me a lot of effort later to be on the ball otherwise guys work off of incorrect information and/or end up spending crazy money on completely unsuitable gear just because all they can find is cheezy Chinese repro stuff in their area etc.

It sounds like you are very much on the right track down there regardless. Take your time, hunt kit up semi-passively and see who all you think would be interested in going then make sure that they know exactly what they are getting into.

@ Ghost: Yep, you are good to go age wise!

They have announced the dates as March 8th-16th, but bear in mind it takes about 18 hours to drive there (So we would need to leave a day or two before and get back a day or two later).

If you are coming up by yourself, check airline ticket prices to Joplin, Mo. Joplin is pretty close by and is one of those airports where they subsidize the landing fees so tickets are frequently quite inexpensive. We can zip up there and scarf you up then deposit you back with little to no additional hassle for anyone if you want to spare yourself the drive.

If you do drive, post up your route on the East Wind forums and see if there's anyone you can at least convoy part way with to keep yourself amused. Heck, if you can catch Doorman partway up from Mobile, Al, you might be able to just park your car on his trailer behind the Robur and go sleep in the sleeper cab for 1/2 the trip or so.
