Scenario
The Uzbekistan Air Defense receives reports from outposts that two Mi-8MT Russian military transport helicopters entered into airspace over Kantubek at approximately 0335. Neither aircraft transmitted identification. Shortly after dropping off radar northwest of Kungirot, the Uzbekistan Air Defense scrambled two Su-27 fighters to intercept. Some 24 minutes after disappearing, both Mi-8MTs reappeared north of Muynak on a presumed exit route out of the country. Uzbek SAM batteries near Kantubek engaged the helis, with reports indicating successful impact on one Mi-8MT. 2nd Mi-8MT status unknown; presumed escaped. The Uzbekistan Air Defense estimates the Mi-8MT’s crash site to be east of the Aral Sea, in an area known as the Badlands. Isolated and with difficult terrain, the Badlands is a favored hideout by bandits and terrorists.
The Uzbekistan government learns a prominent Afghani terrorist wanted by several countries was forcibly taken in the incursion. They are uncertain if he was in the helicopter that crashed, or escaped. The Uzbekistan National Security Service (NSS) has been deployed to the Badlands region to search for survivors and obtain information on the incursion.
Meanwhile, NATO has taken an interest in the crash after learning of the Afghani terrorist. They have also deployed forces to the region.
Both are actively seeking the downed Mi-8MT for not only the terrorist, but any clues explaining the brazen incursion.
