After school, and weekends for me. Might I add that narnia is almost finished. So is my my yacht and atlantis. I'm going to start working on rapture from bioshock now.

DW, you only need two block wide water flows, and yes, it needs to be darker. Also, multiple rooms stacked helps a lot, and you can widen them and step them down in plateus. A mod on vanillacraft server has a ~4000 item on per hour, it is eight stories with I think four stepped down plateus each room. Also, as far as mob spawns go, you can always build an elevator up from it, and then a water conveyor belt over to your killing/collecting trap.

my main complaint about glowstone is that is leaves one dust, and is takes 9 dust to create another block

No chance of importing your compound. As far as a place to build goes...

There is a lot of empty space on the server, but there are also upwards of 100 active players. Everybody spawns at the same place, so it quickly fills up the areas surrounding the spawn point. Walking for 10 or 15 minutes in any given direction should result in some free space.
