Judging by the missile tubes, lack of a turtle back, and then seeing "736" on your shipmates' hat, you were on the West Virginia? Ohio class Trident Boomer right? I can't see your arm in any pictures well enough to see you rating, if that's you with the funky beard(

gotta love the Navy) may I assume helmsman?
Radar was on the USS Will Rogers, SSBN 659, last of the Washington class boomers, missile tech. I'll get him to post some pictures up.

Yep, I was on the USS West Virginia Ohio Class sub. I was a mechanic in the Navy, made it to E-5, then got out after 6 years. Now I am an accountant, sligh career change

We didn't have no fancy M16s back in my day though. We shot sharks with M14s.

i was in for 5 years as ms4(cook e-4)....on the uss cowpens cg-63 aegis cruiser.
how did that guy get away with the funky beards....u bubbleheads were a strange lot...but that beard would be pushing it under any command. i almost went to sub school in bremerton...but got out instead. i do so want to get a set of the navy's neew digi-blue bdu's....just to see how silly they are in person. i watched the at sea special on military channell, my how things have changed.
i will put some pics up, when i can scan them....no digi cameras back in the day

We were shooting at re-breather cartridges and trash in that picture. No sharks mammal enough to show up
And, Iron Chef, we were having a beard contest, and Yes, I won.

Wasn't the rule in the Navy that as long as it wouldn't interfer with your gas mask, it passes?

beards wee allowed in the 70's maybe ealy eighties...then were gotten rid of totally...because of th gas mask/OBD...on ship we had oxygen rebreathers to fight fires and generally just survive a fire.

The whole time I was in, '85 - '91, boomer sailors were allowed to grow beards once we were underway. Once we came back to port we had to be clean shaven. We had to keep the area beneath our chin shaved to form a seal with our EAB masks. You can grow a decent beard in 90 days.

now that makes sense, u guys to hit ports like we did....no beards on the surface warriors unless u had a no shave slip(medical reasons)...i am gonna dig up my pics and get them scanned this week. had a psycho gf back in the day that mangled them a bit but i still got some good ones left

That was kinda the rule when I was in. But, in the pics, I wasn't clean shaven around where the oxygen mask went. Of course, the sub I was on did not pull into other country's ports, due to the huge nuclear missles we were carrying

Radar's boomer was based out of Scotland, and once off Morocco. The tridents went strait from the US while on patrol?

My sub was based out of Georgia. We did go to Canada, but I don't count America's retarded little brother as a country for visiting
