Silent M4

Post by UF_Jester » Tue Dec 21, 2010 1:46 am

I have a vfc e-series m4 and I want to lower the velocity to cqb limits and make as silent as possible. I know how to do the velocity, but I'm not sure how to silence the gear box. Has anyone had any luck with a project like this?

I used to run a Systema for Cqb that was silenced out. I ran a Systema silent piston & head set with smooth systema gears. Had a short barrel with a silencer added. Inside the silencer I inserted foam around the bevel to help muffle air pushed from the gun. It all worked very well.....now that i think about it I miss that gun....27rpm.

Keep in mind that it is a felony if you manufacture/modify a mock suppressor to make the gun shoot quieter.  It would be a bad thing to get pulled over on the way to an airsoft game, and have an overzealous police officer find it.

If you want to stay within the law, your best bet is probably going to be a TM SOCOM suppressor from the old days, back when they made them with foam inside.

Jakob, technically those are still illegal as ANY foam filled suppressor will get you in trouble unless you have a license to own a suppressor.

It's a felony to
modify a can that would explode if used on a real steel gun? That's insane.

Why would it explode?

Jeremy is right, although there is no license to own them.  You just need to pay a tax stamp for each one you possess (whether it be for real steel, airsoft,paintball,etc.).  If the mock suppressor you are using doesn't lower the decibel level of the gun you are good to go.

Not to derail your thread any further, but it seems the best bet are silent internals coupled with sound deadener if applicable.

To clarify, all they will do is confiscate it if it is unlicensed.

Also, if you really want a quiet AEG, use a P90 or AUG as a base. In anycase, use a LESS dense foam, as opposed to the really dense ones found in AEG motor packaging and FTKs. Also, DO NOT extend the barrel through the suppressor, as that will completely negate the effectiveness of the foam. You can also add extra sorbothane to cylinder heads. As Ninja said, a properly shimmed helical gearset and silent (pref. the concave/convex set) cylinder head and piston head set will help. Also, be sure that the motor is mounted to the right height so it will not be loud, and purchase a quiet motor like a TM EG1000. There are two primary sound sets that make an AEG loud, the constant whine of the motor and gears, and the thwack of the piston head hitting the cylinder head. These measures will reduce both as much as possible, though as a stated an AUG or P90 can be made the most quiet.

As Kyle said above me, anything you add to a mock suppressor to actually suppress the sound make it a suppressor and no longer a mock one.

I would expect a cheaply made mock can to blow apart from the pressure of a real bullet, obviously depending on the caliber, but I forgot legal issues with airsoft guns (ie the recent gas gun issues) involve .22 caliber bullets.

Dom, you said that the AUG and the P90 can both be filled with foam to silent it, is this true for the new G&G fn2000? also how much does it actually silent

The reason for this is that there is a lot of empty space around the gearbox in the body of those two guns. If the FN2000 has a similar interior you could do the same thing. Nobody in South Carolina has one, though, so Dom couldn't really tell you that.
