Automatic Shotgun
Skywalker and I have been chatting in the chat room about how to go about making an automatic shotgun, or an aa12.
My idea is to basically drop the feeding/ cylinder head mechanism into an AEG, preferably one with an extended cylinder. Possibly a CA scar-h.
This means having three hop up units, and three barrels. Skywalker believes that the air will be divided behind each bb, and that you'll need 900fps to get 300fps out of each bb. I think that it instead will be divided by joules, so a much more manageable 3J would be all that is needed to get 320fps out of the gun.
Of course the gearbox would need to be specially upgraded. It would need the 3J spring, but would also need a slow, or delayed rate of fire so that all three bbs could be loaded in time.
So what do you guys think? possible, or would it end up being too bulky and not looking like an aa12 once all is said and done?

Re: Automatic Shotgun
Oh it'll look like a aa12 don't worry about that. ... what if you load 3 bbs in one barrel?
No I take back the 900fps. I think if the volume is still manageable, it will work. How long of a barrel can an extended piston work with?

Re: Automatic Shotgun
Basically if an extended piston works up to a 900mm barrel for example, then run 3 250mm barrels and you should be fine. ... Idk if the 900 is accurate its just an example

Re: Automatic Shotgun
In that perfect world I talked about yesterday, 720mm of length, is what an extended cylinder can handle.
But, you'll be dividing it up among three bbs, so... about 250mm should be the length of the barrels, probably shorter. But it's a shot gun, and it's automatic.

Re: Automatic Shotgun
Or you could just use an AEG, and not spend ungodly sums trying to reach ungodly goals. OH wait...Starfolder. right.
Bored.

kill the troll! lol.
ok well. somebody wanna pull up some pics real quick and compare AA12 to Scar-H. guesstimate what the barrel length should be?

lol, I don't know what you mean drew....
Anyway, I once read about a guy who wanted an semi auto shot gun. So he instead modded the gun to shoot 60rps and used a burst mosfet. Basically sounded like a long shot on semi auto, but shot 3 bbs instead of one. I don't know how the project ended up turning out, but it's an idea.

That would send BBs in the same place though, the point of a shotgun is to have a bit of spread.Star_folder wrote:lol, I don't know what you mean drew....

Re: Automatic Shotgun
we could settle for no hop... i know that would be against everything Starfolder stands for but, it is just a full auto shotgun. you go into a room and win. no hop up required.
the other question is, what field limits would this fall under? because we'd want a 0ft med. so we have to make sure we don't shoot ourselves in the foot.
60rps is... well. un reliable. lol. i mean, sure, so is a unique custom made feeding system, but I'd like to have a reliable GB running th whole thing, because replacing those parts can get expensive.
And you can do a really really poor hop up job to make sure it gets a nice spread lol
also... gas powered? ... where is stonewall....

Re: Automatic Shotgun
RS barrel lengths... AA12 is 457. Scar-H CQC is... 260ish? bah somewhere around there.
To make the barrel match the length of the upper receiver it'd have to be a little over 300mm I believe. ... so there is an issue there.... unless you think you could compensate for volume with velocity.
Another option: Custom sector gear. 3 nubs on the side, similar to a dual sector gear, load 3 bbs in each cycle of the GB by moving the tappet plate 3 times. I think at that point with the extra volume of the extended cylinder, and a m140-150 spring, you could pump out some full auto shotgun effect. And shoot just scuff up the end of the barrel a little to make sure you get a nice spread.

Re: Automatic Shotgun
nah, I dont' think the air nozzle would ever seal with the bucking to have three nubs on the sector gear. maybe if they where made just right or something.
Also, the inner barrels shouldn't be longer than 250mm, but that doesn't mean the outer barrel can't be full length.

Re: Automatic Shotgun
yeah, for two. I don't think it would work for three extra nubs. Besides, this means making a completely custom sector gear, and then making a new hop up system that can hold three bbs instead of one.
I think it would be easier to remake the cylinder head so that it has three air nozzles, or one air nozzle that has three holes fitting into three barrels. and have a feeding system similar to a normal 3 shot shotgun.

Re: Automatic Shotgun
All you'd have to do would be drill 2 holes in the surface of the existing sector and place 2 more nubs. I guess I wasnt worried about the hop up as much.... its not like this thing has to shoot over 150 feet

Re: Automatic Shotgun
This looks like an epic pain of a project, but epic nonetheless.
I think your idea kory, of putting the shotgun loading mech into an aeg would probably be the easiest way to try and do it, but i have no idea what you could use as a base because of the space needed for 3 barrels.
As far as the time needed for it to load the BBs, I think they make mosfet chip things that you can program to do things like adjust RPS and create delays between each shot, so the easiest thing to do might be to get one and set it up so that even on full auto it has a one or two second delay between shots. Although as I think about it, that really kills the point of a full auto shotgun...
